SPECIALTY UNITS
The Garfield County Sheriffs Office has numerous specialty units that range from full-time positions to secondary assignments.
All Hazards Response Team
The All Hazards Response Team (AHRT) is a multi-agency tactical team that is responsible for responding to advanced tactical situations. The team is trained and prepared to respond to High Risk Search and Arrest Warrants, Active Shooters, Barricaded Subjects, and Hostage Situations.
K9 Team
The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office has an award-winning K9 Program. We have three dogs on patrol and one dog that works with our School Resource Officers in the local schools. Being a K9 Handler is a rewarding and exciting secondary assignment.
School Resource Officer
Our School Resources Officers play one of the most critical roles within our communities - protecting and serving our youth. School Resource Officer’s are Law Enforcement professionals, coaches, and mentors for students within our school districts.
SPEAR
SPEAR is a major crimes unit comprised of the GCSO, Glenwood Springs and Rifle Police departments, DEA, Homeland Security, the US Marshals Service and a dedicated Deputy District Attorney.
Investigations
The Investigations division is comprised of experienced deputies. Investigators handle or assist with felony level cases including but not limited to: Burglary, Theft, Sexual Assault, Arson, Homicide, Death Investigations, Financial Crimes, Crimes Against Children.
Emergency Operations Management Division
The Emergency Operations Team is comprised of two sergeants and a commander. The purpose of the unit is to organize and run search and rescue operations, rural area patrol, and run wild-land fire operations.
Peer Support
The Garfield County Sheriffs Office believes in the importance of mental health for its employees. The Peer Support team was created to help provide a service to link public safety staff to mental well-being services.
Field Training Officer (FTO)
Every new deputy to the agency must go through the field training program. The deputies selected to be Field Training Officers are selected based on their knowledge, skills, and abilities to ensure that new members to the agency get the highest training possible.
Additional Specialty Units and Assignments
Honor Guard
The team is formed by staff from the Patrol, Civil, and Detentions divisions.
Drug Recognition Experts (DRE)
DRE’s are experts in spotting and identifying various forms of drug impairment. They are highly trained by the State of Colorado to fulfill this role. Currently, Garfield County Sheriff’s Office has 3 DRE’s.
Cell Search Team
Formed by Detentions Deputies, this highly trained unit is responsible for searching the jail and jail cells for contraband. They are critical to keeping the jail a secured facility.
Victims Rights Team (VRA)
The Victims Rights team provide information and resources to victims of violent crime in Garfield County.
