Pay and Benefits

Pay

Sworn Patrol and Detentions staff work 84 hours in a two week pay period:

  • Detentions Specialist: Hiring Range: $27.07+/hour

  • Detention Deputy: Hiring Range: $31.00+/hour

  • Patrol Deputy: Hiring Range: $31.00+/hour

Sheriff Vallario may consider laterals to start at a higher pay rate based on training and experience.

Administrative and IT staff work 40 hours a week. Their pay scales are:

  • Administrative Assistant: Hiring Range: $22.02+/hour

  • Victim’s Advocate Coordinator: Hiring Range: $30.42+/hour

  • IT Specialist: Hiring Range: $30.42+/hour

Take-Home Vehicle and Transportation:

Patrol Deputies who live within Garfield County and within a 40 mile radius of the county line, who have successfully completed Field Training, are able to take their issued patrol vehicle home.

We also have a free shuttle service for staff that runs from Rifle to Glenwood Springs. The County also provides free bus passes to all employees.

These options reduce wear and tear on your personal vehicle and minimizes travel time for employees.

PDO (Paid Days Off) and MSL (Major Sick Leave):

Pay periods are every 14 days. Staff earn PDO at the following rates:

  • At Hire Date: 4 hours every pay period

  • At 2nd Anniversary: 5.54 hours every pay period

  • At 5th Anniversary: 6.77 hours every pay period

  • At 10th Anniversary: 8.61 hours every pay period

  • Every employee earns 3.69 hours of MSL every pay period

Great Retirement:

401(a) - Employees with less than 10 years of services contribute 5 percent of their gross earnings (pre-tax) and the county matches this amount. Employees with 10+ years of services contribute 6 percent of their gross earnings (pre-tax) and the county matches this amount. The county’s contribution is fully vested in five years at a rate of 20% per year or at age 55.  

457(b) - Individuals have the option to make additional, (after tax) voluntary retirement or (pre-tax) deferred compensation contributions; these aren’t matched.

Health Care:

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office offers health care at no cost to all of its full-time employees and their spouses and dependents (plan PPO V) with another plan option as well (plan PPO IV) at an additional cost (deductibles & maximum out-of-pocket costs differ in this plan).

  • Vision is included (and a buy-up option at an additional cost is offered)
