K9 TEAM

Garfield County’s K9 Team

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit was re-established in 2006. The current team is comprised of 2 dual-purpose dogs. Both K9’s perform a detection function (such as narcotics) and a patrol function (such as tracking or apprehension work). K9 Hera and her handler, Deputy Herbert, are assigned to patrol. K9 Bull and his handler, Commander Craine, are assigned to Investigations.

Sergeant Bowen has recently taken over the K9 program and is excited to continue improving and growing our K9 team.

K9 Hera is the first female dual purpose dog assigned to Garfield County. Hera is a 2 year old, Belgian Malinois, born in Poland. Hera takes her job very seriously and comes to work with enthusiasm. She loves her ball, rolling in the grass, and french fries.

K9 Bull is the last marijuana certified dog in the State of Colorado. Bull is an 8 year old, German Shorthair Pointer, born in Debeque, Colorado. Bull has traveled through Western Colorado and Garfield County providing narcotic searches at schools, jails, and prisons. Bull loves his raccoon toy and chicken nuggets.

As of April, 2024 K9 Hera has 38 total deployments. Hera has assisted in 13 total arrests, including a successful track to a bite on a dangerous suspect. Hera has located approximately 291 grams of Methamphetamine, 199 grams of Fentanyl, and 9 grams of illegal Marijuana, along with over 200 items of drug paraphernalia.

Hera has assisted SPEAR, Rifle, New Castle, Silt, CDOT, Secret Service, and Community Corrections with Narcotics and Patrol deployments.

Hera and Bull are certified through the High Desert Police Canine Association.
